The training of church members for vocational cross-cultural ministry is one of the most neglected aspects of missions in the local church. The local church has a solemn responsibility to disciple and equip people for the work of ministry (see Ephesians 4). Furthermore, a sound, biblical local church is the best recruitment ground for quality missionary candidates.
This chapter of the past/book “Church Mobilization” explores the opportunities, roles, and responsibilities of the local church in developing a World Christian mindset throughout your congregation and then intentionally pursuing guidance of the training of those whom God may call from your congregation to full-time cross-cultural service. The local church is the God ordained laboratory of practical ministry training and experience for any Christian worker. Formal Bible school and/or seminary alone cannot ensure or verify the requisite Christian character, people and leadership skills, or practical application of biblical principles demanded in the pressure cooker of full-time cross-cultural ministry.
Take your time working through this chapter. We will include a variety of resources from real-life models in local churches that are trying to be faithful in this area of training. Your missionary candidates and the agencies through which they serve on the foreign field will thank you for your diligence to do this well.
